Most "best Discord bots" lists are written by people who've never run a server. This one isn't. These are the bots we actually run in the **2nd Shift** Discord, a 150+ member gaming community that's busiest after 9 PM. Here's what each one does for us, what's free, and which ones to skip if your server is small.

## Quick picks

- **Best all-round admin bot:** Carl-bot
- **Best music bot:** Jockie Music
- **Best collecting game:** Mudae (or Karuta for card fans)
- **Best for server stats:** Statbot
- **Best for auto-posting news:** MonitoRSS

## Carl-bot: roles, logs and automod

If you only add one admin bot, make it Carl-bot. It handles **reaction roles** (members click an emoji to pick their games or platform), **logging**, **custom commands** and **automod**. The free tier covers what most gaming servers need. A paid tier adds higher limits and more customization.

**Best use:** game and platform roles, so people can find squads for Marvel Rivals, Fortnite or Minecraft without asking around.

## Jockie Music: music in more than one voice channel

The problem with most music bots: one queue for the whole server. Jockie lets you run **up to four separate Jockie bots for free**, each playing in a different voice channel. That's great when one group is in a chill lofi channel and another is running ranked. It supports Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Bandcamp and more, plus 37,000+ radio stations and a Guess the Song game.

## Mudae: the collecting game people get hooked on

Mudae is a character collection game: members roll for characters from anime, manga and games, claim them, and trade. The core game is completely free. Fair warning, it's addictive, and it will become one of your busiest channels. Give it its own channel so it doesn't flood general chat.

## Karuta: anime card drops

Karuta drops anime character cards into chat, and members race to grab them, then collect, upgrade and trade. It's similar to Mudae but card-based. Some servers run both. We do, in separate channels.

## PokéMeow: Pokémon catching in chat

PokéMeow is a Pokémon catching and battling game that runs on chat commands. It's a low-effort way to keep people active between game nights, and Pokémon fans in your server will find it immediately.

## Statbot: see who's actually active

Statbot tracks messages and voice activity and shows you charts and top-member lists on a web dashboard. It's how you find out which channels are dead weight and who your regulars are. We use it for our weekly Member of the Week spotlight.

## MonitoRSS: auto-post news into a channel

MonitoRSS watches RSS feeds and posts new items into a channel automatically, with a title, image and link. It's free for up to 3 feeds. Point it at a news site or a YouTube channel and you've got a live news feed without lifting a finger. Tip: give the bot permission to post in that channel, especially if the channel is read-only for members.

## What about MEE6 and Dyno?

Both are popular. **MEE6** bundles moderation, leveling and welcome messages, but a lot of the good stuff, like advanced leveling rewards, is behind a paid plan. **Dyno** is a solid, long-running moderation bot with free core features. For a small or mid-size gaming server, Carl-bot plus a stats bot covers most of the same ground for free.

## How many bots is too many?

- **Give game bots their own channels.** Mudae, Karuta and PokéMeow can generate hundreds of messages a day.
- **Check permissions.** Only give each bot what it needs. Most don't need admin.
- **Audit every few months.** If nobody uses a bot, kick it, and archive its channel.

## The 2nd Shift take

Bots don't make a community. People do. But the right five bots take the busywork off your plate so you can spend your time actually playing with your people. Start with Carl-bot and Statbot, add one fun game bot, and only add more when people ask for them.
