- Description: Tim Sweeney says Epic is removing the Unreal Engine EULA ban on AI training with UE and MetaHuman outputs. What changes for creators, and what doesn't.

Epic Games is getting ready to let people train AI on what comes out of Unreal Engine and MetaHuman. Right now the Unreal Engine EULA says you can't. Tim Sweeney says that rule is on its way out. If you build in Unreal, make MetaHumans, or just wonder whether your favorite game's art could end up as AI training data, here's what's actually changing and what isn't.

## What Epic is changing in the Unreal Engine EULA

- **Today:** The Unreal Engine and MetaHuman terms don't allow outputs to be used to train AI models.
- **The plan:** Asked on X whether Epic restricts AI training on those outputs, Sweeney answered "Yes currently," and said Epic is "working to remove this restriction from EULA terms."
- **When:** No date yet. Epic hasn't published the new EULA text, and Game Developer said Epic hadn't answered its request for comment.
- **Who decides for each game:** According to Game Developer, games built with these tools will ship under terms each developer chooses. So a studio can still allow or ban AI training on its own game.
- **Fortnite:** Sweeney drew a hard line. Epic doesn't let people use Fortnite IP without permission or compensation.

## Why this is happening now

The timing isn't random. On October 26, Kotaku called out Microsoft and Epic for pushing AI-assisted coding internally while taking down fan-made, AI-coded browser versions of their own games. Kotaku reports Epic sent a DMCA notice against a vibe-coded Fortnite browser port on October 10\. Microsoft sent multiple notices covering Minecraft, Call of Duty and Halo-related web ports. Sweeney's reply split those issues apart. Copying someone's game and IP is one thing. Training AI on engine output is another.

It also fits where Epic has been heading. Game Developer ties the EULA change to Epic's "AI-first" direction, the same push behind its reportedly AI-heavy Disney project. Sweeney has been posting nonstop about AI in software development lately.

## What it means for Unreal and MetaHuman creators

- **If you sell or share renders, cinematics or MetaHuman characters:** once the change lands, the engine license itself won't be what stops someone from training on that work. Your own license terms will matter more than ever.
- **If you ship a game:** decide on your AI-training policy and put it in your EULA or store terms. Don't assume Epic's defaults protect you.
- **If you build AI tools:** Unreal footage and synthetic MetaHuman data could become a legal training source. Wait for the actual EULA text before you start scraping.

## The 2nd Shift take

This is consistent, at least. Epic wants an AI-first future, and it's taking down Fortnite clones because they use Fortnite IP, not because AI made them. But it moves the burden onto creators. Plenty of solo devs and 3D artists picked Unreal partly because the license felt like a shield. Soon it won't be, and most of them won't read the EULA update when it drops. Our advice: write your own terms now. If you're a creator figuring out where you stand on AI tools, our [CRAFTR Quiz](https://www.2ndshift.gg/quiz/) is a quick gut check.
