- Description: Sam Altman called RAM in home PCs a 'quite terrible' use of scarce DRAM. Here's what he said, what 32GB of DDR5 costs now, and when prices may fall.

**OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the RAM in your PC is a bad use of the world's memory supply.** On John Collison's Cheeky Pint podcast, he called it "quite terrible" for everyone to hold "the world's limited supply of DRAM" in machines "being used maybe 5% of the time." If you've priced a stick of DDR5 lately, you already know why that landed badly.

## What Altman actually said

The comments came while discussing people running open-source AI on their own hardware. His argument is about efficiency: home PCs sit mostly idle, while data centers run memory hard, so in a supply crunch he says you want "maximum utilization in the cloud." He added that many people's intuition runs the other way.

Worth being clear: he wasn't announcing a plan to take anything out of your machine, and no clarification had surfaced in the coverage we read. Altman's quoted remarks are about personal computers. The "Xbox too" framing going around came from commentary, not from him.

## RAM prices right now

- **32GB DDR5-6000:** PC Gamer tracked a Crucial Pro kit at $553, up from about $80-$100 for most of 2024 and 2025.
- **32GB DDR4-3200:** a Corsair Vengeance kit went from about $50 to $258.
- **General 32GB DDR5 kits:** Tom's Guide puts them at around $500.
- **GPUs:** Tom's Guide also says the RTX 5080 is peaking above $2,000.

Why it's happening: high-bandwidth memory for AI servers is made on the same lines as consumer RAM, and Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are reportedly prioritizing enterprise buyers.

## When will RAM prices drop?

Nobody agrees. Per PC Gamer, Acer's CEO reportedly expects relief around mid-2027, while Citrini Research sees a shortfall through 2030 and SK Hynix warns under-supply could run past that. New fabs aren't likely to help DRAM prices before 2028 at the earliest.

## The 2nd Shift take

Altman isn't wrong on the math. Your PC's memory is idle most of the day. He's just leaving out what that memory is for. It's there for the three hours after work when you're playing, rendering a clip or running a local model that doesn't bill you monthly. Cloud-first memory is great for the people selling cloud. For players and creators, owning your hardware is still the only version of this deal where nobody can change the price on you later.

If you're building now, don't panic-buy. Tune what you've got first, and if you're using local AI tools, take the [CRAFTR Quiz](https://www.2ndshift.gg/quiz/) to see what kind of creator setup fits how you work.

Holding onto your RAM out of spite? Same. Come argue about it in the [2nd Shift Discord](https://discord.gg/SbzeqKvGVA?ref=2ndshift.gg).
