Sega tried to sell a 15-year-old classic back to PC players with a fresh coat of paint. Two days later, the paint was coming off. **Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition** has been pulled from sale after a wave of negative reviews over bugs, performance, and art that players say was run through AI upscaling without a word of disclosure.

## What happened

- **Oct 13, 2026:** Sega launched the Complete Edition on PC as an "updated, enhanced" version of the 2011 strategy classic, priced at $40, per Kotaku.
- The older versions of Shogun 2 were taken off sale at the same time.
- Steam reviews cratered fast. VGC reported the game sat at **Overwhelmingly Negative**, with only about 19% of 2,000+ reviews recommending it.
- **Oct 15, 2026:** Sega said the release "is not where it needs to be" and is working with platform holders to temporarily remove it.

## The AI problem

The loudest complaint wasn't just the bugs (some of which are carried over from the original). Players spotted art that looked machine-upscaled, including unit cards where a hand had more than five fingers, as VGC noted. Kotaku reported that small, blurry original art was enlarged with AI and that plenty of results looked absurd, while other encyclopedia art wasn't upscaled at all and still shows up as tiny thumbnails.

Kotaku also reported that the Steam page hadn't been updated with Steam's required AI-content disclosure at the time of writing, and Sega's statement didn't mention AI at all.

## Where it stands now

- The original 2011 version of Shogun 2 is being put back on sale.
- Anyone who already bought the Complete Edition keeps access to it.
- Sega says it is working with its development partner to find the causes and deliver improvements.
- No date has been given for the Complete Edition's return.

## The 2nd Shift take

This is the clearest example yet of how not to use AI in games. Upscaling old assets isn't evil on its own; studios and modders have done it for years. The problem is doing it cheaply, skipping the quality check, not telling anyone, and charging more for the result. Players will forgive a lot. They won't forgive being treated like they can't count fingers.

If you make art, mods, or content yourself, the lesson is simple: AI tools are fine as part of your workflow, but your name is on the final output. Disclose it, review it, own it. Not sure where AI fits in your own creative setup? Take the [CRAFTR Quiz](https://www.2ndshift.gg/quiz/).
