Here's how to cut through the noise, plus Monster Hunter Wilds on Switch 2. - Author: CJ Davis - Tags: Gaming Clear your backlog, because your backlog just got a lot bigger. Steam Next Fest's October 2026 edition is live, and it's the biggest one yet by a mile. Thousands of free demos, a week to play them, and the usual fight to find the gems before the fest ends. ## Steam Next Fest October 2026: the dates - **Starts:** Monday, October 19, 2026 at 10am Pacific - **Ends:** Monday, October 26, 2026 at 10am Pacific - **What you get:** free demos of upcoming games, plus developer livestreams across the week - **Where:** the Next Fest hub on the Steam store Demos are tied to the event window, so some may vanish when the fest wraps. If something hooks you, wishlist it right away. That's the single biggest signal you can send a small studio. ## 8,000+ demos, and that's the problem According to PC Gamer, Valve's press preview page listed 8,011 demos for this edition. That's roughly double June 2026, which GameDiscoverCo counted at 4,382 demos. For perspective, June 2022 had just over 1,000. - More demos means more choice, but also way more noise. - PC Gamer points to a wave of fast, low-effort "vibe-coded" clones and mash-ups hitting Steam. - One developer, NoGlyph, has filed a copyright notice with Valve, accusing a recent release of copying code from Needle In A Haystack. Steam's discovery algorithm is going to bury most of these demos. Plenty of good games will get missed this week simply because nobody scrolled far enough. ## Not on PC? Monster Hunter Wilds hits Switch 2 with a demo too It's demo week everywhere. Capcom's free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo lands on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop on October 19 Pacific (October 20 in Europe), per VGC and Capcom's official Monster Hunter account. ![A hunter fights a giant shaggy monster in Monster Hunter Wilds](https://storage.ghost.io/c/7d/48/7d48e4f5-a536-4f09-bc46-45fa4fa53fba/content/images/2026/10/monster-hunter-wilds-switch-2.jpg) Image: Capcom via Steam - **Content:** character creation plus the story through Chapter 1-3, same as the PS5, Xbox and Steam demo - **Saves:** your demo progress carries over to the full game - **Multiplayer:** local play works, online is full-game only - **Full release:** December 4, with digital pre-orders opening alongside the demo ## The 2nd Shift take Next Fest is still the best week of the year for indie discovery, but 8,000 demos isn't a festival anymore. It's a firehose. The players who get the most out of it this time won't be the ones who try the most demos. They'll be the ones who lean on curators they trust, follow devs they already like, and ignore the front page. So here's our ask: when you find something good, say so out loud. Post it, clip it, wishlist it. Word of mouth is the only algorithm small devs can actually count on right now. And the Monster Hunter demo on Switch 2 is the real test of whether that port holds up. Play it before you pre-order. Found a Next Fest demo worth everyone's time?
