- Description: Epic's Tim Sweeney calls Steam's AI disclosure labels 'abhorrent' and political. What Steam actually requires and why it matters to players and devs.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney spent the weekend going after Steam's AI disclosure labels again, and this time he went all in. Over October 24-25 on X he called Valve's rule "abhorrent" and said the labels are "just as partisan as mandatory political essays." Here's what Steam actually requires, what Sweeney said, and why it matters if you buy games or make them.

## What Steam's AI disclosure rule requires

- **Who:** every developer releasing a game on Steam
- **What gets disclosed:** generative AI used to make game content (art, voice, translation and other assets), plus AI content generated live while you play
- **What doesn't:** AI coding helpers and similar dev tools. Valve dropped that requirement earlier this year.
- **Where you see it:** an "AI Generated Content Disclosure" section near the bottom of the store page, next to content warnings
- **Since:** 2024, when Valve opened Steam to AI-made games on the condition that they're labeled

## What Sweeney said

It started when AI commentator Matt Workman posted that an AI disclosure is absurd in 2026\. Sweeney piled on, calling the label a forced political statement. His main argument is about money, not ethics: "There is a real economic cost to Valve's foray into forced political disclosures." He says the label invites "AI hate campaigns" that hurt small developers. When someone replied that this was a big opening for Epic, he answered "Yep!"

Some context worth knowing:

- This isn't new. Back in late 2025 Sweeney argued AI "will be involved in nearly all future production," so labels make no sense.
- Epic's own Fab asset marketplace *does* require AI disclosures. Sweeney says that's different because Fab sells to businesses that need to know where content came from.
- Epic has gone hard on AI this year. It pushed "AI first" development and then walked back the AI requirement for its MegaJam.
- Valve hasn't responded publicly.

## Why gamers and creators should care

The label is the only standard signal players get about AI in a game before they buy it. If it goes away, the only way to find out is after you've paid. For creators, it's a real tradeoff: a disclosure can draw review-bombing, but getting caught hiding AI art is worse. Just ask Sega about Shogun 2.

## The 2nd Shift take

Calling a factual label "political" is a dodge. "This game used AI voices" is just information, the same way "contains violence" is. If AI tools are as good as Epic keeps saying, devs shouldn't need to hide them. Sweeney does have one real point: the label is a blunt yes or no. One AI-touched texture gets the same tag as a fully generated asset flip. The fix is a more detailed label, not no label.
