Discord Overlay Not Working? 10 Fixes That Actually Work (2026)

Discord overlay not showing up in your game? Most of the time it's one of three things: the overlay is off for that game, the game is running in true fullscreen, or you're using a version of Discord that doesn't have an overlay at all. Work through the fixes below in order. Each one takes a minute or less.

Quick checklist

• You're using the Discord desktop app on Windows (not the browser, phone or Mac app).
• User Settings > Game Overlay is turned on.
• The overlay is turned on for that specific game.
• The game is set to Borderless Windowed or Windowed, not true Fullscreen.
• You know your overlay keybind (default Shift + ` to lock the overlay).

1. Use the Windows desktop app

The game overlay only exists in the Discord desktop app on Windows. Discord's own support page says it isn't supported on Mac, and you won't find it in the browser version or on your phone. If you normally keep Discord open in a browser tab, install the desktop app and sign in there.

2. Turn the overlay on

1. Click the cog next to your username to open User Settings.
2. Open Game Overlay and switch the in-game overlay on.

3. Turn it on for the game you're playing

The main switch isn't enough on its own. Discord also has a per-game setting, and it can be off for one game even when it's on everywhere else.

1. Launch the game so Discord detects it.
2. Go to User Settings > Registered Games (in newer versions it sits under your activity settings).
3. Find the game and turn its overlay toggle on. A monitor icon with a slash through it means the overlay is off for that game.

If the game doesn't show up in the list at all, use Add it! to register it manually while it's running.

4. Switch the game to Borderless Windowed

This is the fix for most people in 2026. Discord rebuilt the overlay starting in April 2024 so it works with far more games, but Discord says the new overlay does not work in true fullscreen. Open the game's video or display settings and pick Borderless Windowed (some games call it Windowed Fullscreen or Borderless Fullscreen). It looks the same as fullscreen on a single monitor.

Need true fullscreen? Discord added an Enable legacy overlay option under User Settings > Game Overlay for games that only run in exclusive fullscreen. Discord warns that this option may be removed in the future, so treat it as a backup, not the main fix.

5. Check your keybind

The overlay can be working fine while you just can't open it. By default, Shift + ` (the key above Tab) toggles the overlay lock so you can click on it. You can set your own under User Settings > Game Overlay, or add Toggle Overlay and Toggle Overlay Lock under User Settings > Keybinds. If another app (Steam, a capture tool, your GPU software) uses the same shortcut, change one of them.

6. Overlay shows, but no messages or voice names

• Under Game Overlay, make sure Show Text Chat Notifications is on if you want to see DMs and server messages.
• Muted servers, channels, DMs and group chats won't pop up in the overlay.
• Streamer Mode hides notifications. Turn it off under User Settings > Streamer Mode, or check its notification settings.
• For the voice widget, set Display Users and Display Names to Always while you test.

7. Some games just don't support it

Discord's support page still lists games where the overlay is known not to work, including Roblox, Final Fantasy XIV, Destiny 2, Minecraft (Windows 10 Edition), Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas. It also says games that use Vulkan and many older games aren't supported. For Roblox, Baldur's Gate 3 and Counter-Strike 2, Discord suggests trying windowed or borderless windowed first.

If your game is on that list, the overlay may never work there. Keep Discord on a second monitor, or use your phone for voice and chat.

8. Lag, stutter or crashes with the overlay on

• Turn the overlay off for just that game (step 3). Discord recommends this first if the overlay causes lag or crashes.
• Try turning off Hardware Acceleration under User Settings > Advanced, then restart Discord.
• Update Discord, Windows and your graphics driver.

9. Antivirus is blocking Discord

Some antivirus apps flag Discord's overlay because it hooks into games. Discord says this is a false positive. Add Discord's install folder to your antivirus allow list, then restart Discord and the game.

10. Last resort: clean reinstall

1. Close Discord completely, including in Task Manager.
2. Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
3. Delete the leftover Discord folders in %appdata% and %localappdata%.
4. Restart your PC and install the latest version from discord.com.

Why does the Discord overlay only work in some games?
