Grand Theft Auto VI is less than four weeks out. If you only get a couple of hours after work, launch night needs a bit of planning so you don't spend it watching a progress bar. Here's what Rockstar has actually confirmed about release timing, preloading and download size, and what it hasn't announced yet. For the bigger picture, see our GTA 6 hub.

Release date and platforms

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two reaffirmed the date in its May earnings report, Rockstar repeated it in its June 24 pre-order announcement, and the launch trailer released on October 15 shows it again. No PS4 or Xbox One version has been announced. It's the headline game on our November 2026 releases list and on the full release calendar.

What time does GTA 6 come out?

Rockstar has not announced an official unlock time. In early September, IGN and Pure Xbox reported that PlayStation Store listings, first gathered by the fan site GTAVice, show the game unlocking at midnight local time in each region. If those listings hold, New Zealand gets in first, about 19 hours before some other regions. Rockstar hasn't commented on the listings, and they could still change.

Midnight local time is common for big console launches, and Rockstar opened GTA 6 pre-orders at midnight local time on June 25. That fits the listings, but we're not calling it confirmed until Rockstar or Xbox says so.

GTA 6 preload: when it starts

This part is confirmed. Rockstar Support says preloading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026, a full week before launch.

• Digital pre-orders on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store can preload starting November 12.
• Physical copies ship and are available for pickup at retailers from November 12. You redeem the code inside the box, and it supports preloading straight away.

Preload during the week, and on the 19th the game just unlocks.

GTA 6 download size: 210GB reported on PS5

As of October 27, the PS5 download is reported at about 210GB. The figure comes from the PlayStation Game Size account, which tracks PlayStation Store backend data, and was picked up by Push Square, Insider Gaming and others. Push Square points out it isn't official and could change before launch. Rockstar still hasn't published a size, and no Xbox figure has surfaced. The viral "600GB" screenshot from earlier this month was likely fake, according to Insider Gaming.

Plan for at least 210GB free on PS5, plus room for a day-one patch. On a 100Mbps connection, 210GB takes roughly five hours under ideal conditions. Slower connections can take a day or more, so start the preload on November 12.

Editions, price and physical vs digital

• Standard Edition: $79.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
• Ultimate Edition: $99.99. It's digital only and adds an Ultimate Edition Upgrade of vehicles, weapons, properties and businesses, which unlock chapter by chapter through Jason and Lucia's story. Standard owners can buy the upgrade later as an add-on.
• Physical edition: The box holds a download code, not a disc. Without a disc, a "physical" copy still has to download the whole game.
• Codes: Rockstar Support says PlayStation codes are tied to your account's country. Xbox codes are not region-locked.
• Pre-order bonus: Physical pre-orders, and digital orders placed before November 20, 2026, get the Vintage Vice City Pack: a '55 Vapid Stanier sedan and garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. Digital orders also come with one month of GTA+.

If you're getting it boxed, you can pre-order GTA 6 on Amazon. Since it's a code either way, make sure the delivery date gives you time to preload.

PC, Game Pass and PS Plus

PC: Not announced. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said Rockstar has only announced GTA 6 for consoles so far, while noting that Take-Two's big games tend to reach more platforms over time. No PC date exists.

Game Pass / PS Plus: Neither has been announced. Plan to buy it.

What to do before launch night

1. Clear storage space now

The PS5 download is reported at about 210GB, so leave at least that much free, plus some extra. Clearing out old installs this week beats doing it at 11pm on the 12th. If you're short on space, the PS5 takes M.2 NVMe SSDs. Look for one with a heatsink, like these PS5 SSD options. Xbox Series X|S uses a plug-in Xbox Series storage expansion card. Check compatibility before you buy.

2. Update your console and turn on auto-downloads

Install any pending system update. Then make sure your console can download while in rest mode, so the preload runs while you're at work. And while you're in Settings, check your account security. PSN users are reporting account takeovers that get around 2FA, so read our PSN account hack guide before you preload.

3. Check your internet

A huge download on a slow connection can take a day or more. Start the preload on November 12, and plug in Ethernet if you can.

4. Redeem physical codes the day they arrive

Physical copies are just codes, so redeem yours as soon as it arrives and start the preload.

5. Plan for a day-one patch

Big launches often get an update at or near release. Rockstar hasn't announced one for GTA 6, but leave some space and time just in case.
