What kind of game is it?

Resonance is co-developed by Square Enix and Lancarse (The DioField Chronicle) and rebuilds the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius as a standalone console RPG. You play Rain, an airship squadron commander from Grandshelt, trying to protect the world's remaining crystals after the Earth Crystal shatters.

Combat is turn-based with a turn-order timeline instead of classic ATB. Hitting weaknesses staggers enemies for extra turns and Resonance attacks. Series favorites like Cloud and Tidus show up as equippable "Visions," and Sephiroth is in there as an optional challenge fight. Noriyasu Agematsu handles the music, with 120 tracks.

Critics are into it: Final Fantasy Resonance sits at an 85 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic with 92% of critics recommending it across 76 reviews, and Famitsu gave it 36/40. Reported playtime is around 20 to 30 hours for the main story.

The 2nd Shift take

A $50 price and a demo with save carryover is the right way to sell a nostalgia project, and more publishers should copy it. The real question is the source material: Brave Exvius was a gacha game, and its story was built around a monetization loop. Rebuilding it as a straight RPG is a bet that the story holds up on its own, and the early reviews say it mostly does. Denuvo on PC is a ding. If Octopath Traveler or Triangle Strategy ever ate your weekend, grab the demo tonight. Your save is waiting for you on Thursday.
