Half-Life 3 'HLX' Slip: Valve Dev Says the Codename on Stage

A Valve composer said "HLX," Half-Life 3's rumored codename, at GameSoundCon. Is Half-Life 3 announced? Here's what's real and what's not.

Somewhere in Burbank, a Valve audio veteran just said three letters he probably wasn't supposed to. Half-Life fans have been running on fumes for years, so yes, "HLX" said out loud on a conference stage is enough to light the whole internet up again.

Quick answers first: Half-Life 3 is not officially announced. There is no release date, no confirmed platforms, and no trailer. What we have is a Valve developer naming the project's rumored codename in public.

What happened at GameSoundCon

  • Who: Mike Morasky, Valve composer and audio veteran (Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and the Half-Life: Alyx soundtrack).
  • Where: A GameSoundCon 2026 panel in Burbank, California, on Valve's audio engine.
  • When it broke: Coverage went up on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
  • What he said: Answering a question about Valve's audio HDR system, Morasky said Deadlock has its own version, then added "HLX has its own version," per PC Gamer.
  • The tell: Fellow panelist David Feise reportedly ribbed him afterward with "Good job, you only said HLX once."

What is HLX?

HLX is the internal name fans and dataminers have tied to Valve's next Half-Life project. According to PC Gamer, it first surfaced in early 2024 in a Counter-Strike 2 data string that looked a lot like "HLVR," the old codename for Half-Life: Alyx. In late 2025, Morasky nearly said it in an interview before switching to "Alyx" mid-word.

VGC reports that Valve insiders claim the game is in active development and was playable start to finish by testers, with Valve-watcher Tyler McVicker saying it is not a VR game. None of that is confirmed by Valve, and Valve has not commented on the panel.

  • Official HLX status: unannounced
  • Steam Machine launch title? No. Valve's new hardware launched without a new Half-Life, per Notebookcheck

The 2nd Shift take

A codename slip is not an announcement, and we've all been burned by "Half-Life 3 confirmed" memes for almost two decades. But this one hits different: it's not a datamine or a leaker, it's a Valve employee describing HLX as a real thing with its own audio tech, sitting next to Deadlock, a game that very much exists. Our read: HLX is real and deep in development. Whether it's literally called Half-Life 3, and whether Valve shows it before 2027, is still anyone's guess. Don't buy hardware for it yet. Do keep notifications on.

Think HLX gets revealed at The Game Awards or not until it's done? Argue it out with us in the 2nd Shift Discord.
