Xbox Manager: Devs Avoiding AI Are 'Planning for a Fake Future'
An Xbox strategy manager vibe-coded a soccer game in two days and says studios skipping AI are 'planning for a fake future.' Here's our take.
An Xbox strategy manager spent a weekend vibe-coding a soccer game and came back with a message for every studio skipping AI: you're doing business wrong. The internet, predictably, did not take it well.
What he said
Brandon Stirrup, a senior business strategy manager at Microsoft, posted a thread on X on October 19, reported by GamesRadar+. The highlights:
- He says he "vibe coded a bad but improvable game in two days," with about three hours of active work.
- The game is a basic soccer sim built by prompting an AI agent. He says he'd never made a game before.
- To studios planning without AI: "You're planning for a fake future."
- He claimed "gaming is the only industry pretending to not use AI," and that hundreds of Xbox staff use it. That figure hasn't been verified.
Where Xbox leadership stands
This isn't an official Xbox statement — it's one manager's posts. And it clashes with how the boss has been talking:
- When Asha Sharma took over Xbox earlier this year, she promised no "soulless AI slop" and said great stories are made by humans.
- Speaking to Fortune this month, she said Xbox isn't about to "turn into xbox.ai."
- Meanwhile, Fortune reports the biggest gaming funding rounds of 2026 are going to AI tool makers, not studios.
The 2nd Shift take
Here's the thing: he's not totally wrong that AI is already in the toolbox. Plenty of devs use it for code, testing and grunt work, and pretending otherwise is silly.
But "I made a bad game in two days" is not the flex he thinks it is. Making a prototype was never the hard part — making it good is. Games like Palworld, Wardogs and Slay the Spire 2 are doing just fine, and telling small teams they shouldn't be in business is how you lose the room. Players aren't anti-tool; they're anti-slop. If you want to know where you land as a creator in all this, take our CRAFTR Quiz and see what kind of builder you actually are.
Got a take? Bring it to the 2nd Shift Discord — the late crew is already arguing about it.
