Nintendo is 18 days out from launching the biggest remake in Zelda history, and it's stopped being shy about it. Two new trailers quietly landed on Nintendo's Japanese YouTube channel this week, right after a five-minute overview trailer, and one of them finally shows the fight every N64 kid remembers: Link vs. Dark Link.

What the new trailers show

According to GamesRadar+, Nintendo posted the two short trailers without fanfare. The headliners:

  • Dark Link, finally on camera. The 30-second combat montage gives us the first official look at the Water Temple's shadow duel, about 16 seconds in.
  • Ganondorf on the organ. The montage opens on the big man himself, which is the correct way to open anything.
  • A second spot focused on Link, Zelda, the Ocarina, the Master Sword and a tour of remade locations.

Before that, on October 14, Nintendo of America dropped a full overview trailer walking through the remake's features. It's the best five minutes to spend if you want to know what actually changed:

The 2nd Shift take

Remakes live or die on whether they respect the muscle memory, and so far this one looks like it does. The Dark Link reveal is smart marketing: it's the single fight people bring up when they talk about OoT, and Nintendo knows it. The Hall of Fallen Heroes rematch mode is the feature we're most curious about, because it gives a 1998 game something it never had: a reason to replay bosses without starting a new file.

The open question is pacing. Voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue can make a classic feel richer, or they can make the Deku Tree feel like a 20-minute tutorial. We'll know on November 5. At $59.99, this is a full-price swing at a game a lot of us have already beaten three times. If it nails the Water Temple, nobody's going to complain.
